Administrative Science Quarterly (ASQ) occupies a peculiar place in the history of organizational studies. Founded by James Thompson in 1956, the journal since the beginning featured authors and contributions that strongly characterized this field and influenced generations of scholars. ASQ’s reputation and influence is still evident today, even though the journal went through significant changes. In this contribution, we revisit ASQ’s history and, consequently, at least in part, the evolution of organization studies, of which ASQ is one of the main protagonists.

Abstract

Administrative Science Quarterly (ASQ) occupies a peculiar place in the history of organizational studies. Founded by James Thompson in 1956, the journal since the beginning featured authors and contributions that strongly characterized this field and influenced generations of scholars. ASQ’s reputation and influence is still evident today, even though the journal went through significant changes. In this contribution, we revisit ASQ’s history and, consequently, at least in part, the evolution of organization studies, of which ASQ is one of the main protagonists.
