Abstract

The emphasis in the UNESCO / UIA Charter, on the understanding of "methods of investigation" and training concerning "technical research" could translate into a more clear definition, as part of the degree programs, of the fertile interaction between teaching and research that professors play in universities. In the same Charter it is emphasized that "research and publication should be regarded as an inherent activity of architectural educators and may encompass applied methods and experiences in architectural practice, project work and construction methods, as well as academic disciplines." Then, even more explicitly it is stated that "... continuous interaction between the practice and teaching of architecture must be encouraged and protected..." . We think that "practice the project to teach design" should be one of the conditions to guarantee within universities, through various actions: - by providing for a proportional and sustainable relationship in degree courses between professors and lecturers on one side and lecturers on contract, a formula that employs, in addition to research Doctors and Fellows, a significant number of carefully selected outside professionals, since the early years of training, both by semester courses that intensive workshops; - allowing professors to carry out professional activities in all disciplines of architecture both in university research centers and professional studies; - promoting a fertile interaction between educational activities and research experiences, particularly in the last years of training (4th and 5th year), as already happens in post-graduate education (master and PhD). The relationship between training for dissertation and departmental research may trigger virtuous circuits between teaching and research too: either through didactic verification of research methodologies tested in applied researches, both through carrying out researches for study cases already discussed, on an experimental basis, during dissertations.
