The custom of celebrating the foundation of a new city or a new building by laying the first stone and calculating its birth chart was common practice in the Renaissance, as proven by extensive documental evidence in Girolamo Cardano (De exemplis centum geniturarum, 1547), Luca Gaurico (Tractatus Astrologicus, 1552) and Francesco Giuntini (Speculum Astrologiae, 1583). This paper collates the textual sources of the Herculean Additions of Ferrara (1492) and Modena (1546), in the attempt to get an insight of the influence of astronomic and astrological culture on urban design.

Abstract
The custom of celebrating the foundation of a new city or a new building by laying the first stone and calculating its birth chart was common practice in the Renaissance, as proven by extensive documental evidence in Girolamo Cardano (De exemplis centum geniturarum, 1547), Luca Gaurico (Tractatus Astrologicus, 1552) and Francesco Giuntini (Speculum Astrologiae, 1583). This paper collates the textual sources of the Herculean Additions of Ferrara (1492) and Modena (1546), in the attempt to get an insight of the influence of astronomic and astrological culture on urban design.File in questo prodotto:
