It might seem strange that in speaking of the public sphere we want to start from sport. But is there a real dichotomy between society and sport? If we try to define what sport is and how it differs from playing, we could say that what makes the sport what it is, it is precisely its own rules. Are, in fact, rules that tell us how to practice it, where to practice it, how long to practice it, how many can practice it, who wins and who loses, and so on. The rules of a sport (at whatever level it is practiced) are codifications of behaviors that those who want to practice it are required to follow, even though rules are (temporarily) untouchable, at least in relation to the community of participants who formulated them. If you violate the rules of a sport, you simply don’t practice it anymore, you are doing something else. And the practitioners’ community considers the violation so serious to the extent that the violator may also be excluded from the game, and then from that community. All of this is useful to understand and interpret a commitment in public life. Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty, Leadership may be the essential rules - derived from the sport – of the public sphere itself and the lifestyle of those who are engaged in public life.
