This article traces some significant writings by Remo Fornaca, with the aim to highlight relevant issues and concepts about the field of lifelong learning and adult education. On the one hand, the constant attention that Fornaca reserved to social complexity represents the first source of interest to consider education as a fact not circumscribed to the school and conventional age of evolution. On the other hand, some of his most detailed works on this issue have shown some conditions of lifelong education, in particular: to pursue objectives of mental agility, to plan our own life, and to be not only culture recipient, but also culture producer. In conclusion, the major element consists of considering social issues as cognitive problems: in this sense, it is possible to assign to education the task to humanize the human beings and to aim at a good quality of life.
