The history of the city of Ferrara has been investigated by many fields of research, notably historical, archeological and city planning. Besides a few exceptions, these studies have produced an established understanding of the developing stages of the city, which have been mostly interpreted in an “additional” sense. So far there has been very little interest for what concerns the complex relationship between the urban layout of the city and the buildings that concretize it. The “phenomenological” interpretation of the developing processes of the city of Ferrara, which began almost a decade ago, purposely conducted beyond any historiographical conditioning has produced important, and even unexpected, scientific results that are able to outline the “structural” features of the city. The interpretation of said phenomena stands as an asset for what concerns the knowledge of the original history of the city. Furthermore it provides an example of the method of analysis required to meet the inevitable contemporary transformations of the city whilst still respecting the urban built reality.
