This work studied the feasibility of using computational simulation to predict the trajectories of embolic particle in cerebral arterial network. In the study, an anatomically realistic cerebral arterial network was generated from MRI images. CFD simulations were performed together with particle tracking calculations to simulation emboli migration in the arteries. The results showed that different sized particles adopted different kind of migration routes. For the particle which has the same density as the fluid, the particle trajectory predictions were almost the same regardless the coupling method used in particle tracking calculations.

Abstract

This work studied the feasibility of using computational simulation to predict the trajectories of embolic particle in cerebral arterial network. In the study, an anatomically realistic cerebral arterial network was generated from MRI images. CFD simulations were performed together with particle tracking calculations to simulation emboli migration in the arteries. The results showed that different sized particles adopted different kind of migration routes. For the particle which has the same density as the fluid, the particle trajectory predictions were almost the same regardless the coupling method used in particle tracking calculations.
