K-edge imaging is a technique used for mapping elements in hidden painting layers. It is generally applied using monochromatic (the synchrotron light) or quasi monochromatic sources. The aim of this study is the application of K-edge subtraction technique using common X-ray sources with appropriate K-edge filters that bracket the absorption edge of element to be detected in paints. In order to validate this method, samples of two elements are studied, niobium and cadmium. With the same samples a complementary analyses are performed with micro X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and correlation between results will be presented and discussed.

Abstract

K-edge imaging is a technique used for mapping elements in hidden painting layers. It is generally applied using monochromatic (the synchrotron light) or quasi monochromatic sources. The aim of this study is the application of K-edge subtraction technique using common X-ray sources with appropriate K-edge filters that bracket the absorption edge of element to be detected in paints. In order to validate this method, samples of two elements are studied, niobium and cadmium. With the same samples a complementary analyses are performed with micro X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and correlation between results will be presented and discussed.
