Following S.Cavell's reading of Wittgenstein's writings, there is nowadays a widespread tendency to emphasize the ethical tone of Wittgenstein's philosophical work and to identify it with what is taken to be the rediscovery and acceptance of the "ordinary". Abstract

Following S.Cavell's reading of Wittgenstein's writings, there is nowadays a widespread tendency to emphasize the ethical tone of Wittgenstein's philosophical work and to identify it with what is taken to be the rediscovery and acceptance of the "ordinary". I criticize such a tendency and try to show that it rests on a misunderstanding concerning the idea that philosophical activity requires a transformation of the philosopher's life.
