Healthy lowlanders were studied on the 3rd-4th day of stay in Lobuche (5050 m).Leptin was similar at SL or HA. Pre-exercise VEGF at HA was lower, and cortisol was higher, than at SL; pre-exercise VEGF and cortisol were inversely correlated. Significant correlations were also found between mean nocturnal SpO2 and glucose or triglyceride concentrations at awakening, and between time spent at SpO2<90% and the HOMA index. Conclusions: These findings suggest that leptin levels are unaffected at HA, whereas nocturnal hypoxic stress appears to affect plasma VEGF and metabolic variables at HA
