From 15 to 19 October 2012, the Single Market week was celebrated within the European Union: a great opportunity to reflect over the last twenty years, taking into account the achieved results and giving a glimpse of the future perspectives and new challenges that Europe is going to face. After explaining the different meanings of the expressions “Common Market”, “Single Market” and “Internal Market”, often used as synonyms (Moussis, 2011), the paper will focus on the establishment of the Common Market and its main features. After trying to get a definition of the two different concepts and the Single Market one, the article focuses on the main features characterizing the European integration scheme: the four freedoms, the adoption of common policies in relevant areas as agriculture and transports, the coordination of economic policies. Attention will be also paid to the recent “rebooting” of the Single Market, in the framework of Europe 2020 Strategy, through the Single Market Act I and the Single Market Act II. Conclusions will be finally drawn on the results achieved from the Treaty Establishing the European Economic Community, up till now, and on possible future development and challenges for a true EU integration.
