Different European experiences show the increasing attention to the design of public space and how it is taking a leading role in the processes of urban regeneration. In this specific location, we are interested only the study of open public space, the negative space defined by the built volumes (Goldfinger, 1969). Within the different research experiences that are studying for years these issues, we will investigate in particular the concept of quality in the sense of comfort climate (Olgyay, 1962), then defining the concept of environment and its invisible components as a specific field of research. This article will demonstrate how this research field proves to be extremely topical and interesting for possible future developments: the new technical capabilities to investigate the invisible components of the environment move the research in the direction of a continuous redefinition of the concept of comfort . In a first introduction, this article presents the role of public space in urban regeneration and the relevance of this research. In the second part, for a definition of public space quality, we introduce the concept of environment and the relationship between invisible parameters and climate comfort. The final part describes some recent research experiences related to this report. We take as examples studies which refer to different professional sectors: academic research, projects and art installations, a project for the redevelopment of a public space. The diversity of projects is only apparent, it is in fact comparable research methodologies that investigate some of the different parameters that define the invisible. So we want to emphasize the importance of a sensitive approach to these issues and how it still necessary to continue research in this area could benefit from new tools of analysis and knowledge from different disciplines.
