Proton beams were stored in COSY at 45 MeV and electron-cooled. Their lifetime was measured with gas target on and off and found to be 321.3 ± 0.4 s and 4639 ± 70 s, respectively. A model based on calculated machine parameters and the measured, interpolated residual gas distribution in COSY predicts lifetimes which are about 7 times longer. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.
