There are many evidences in literature that suicidal ideation is a relevant issue for university students, particularly if we consider the positive correlation of suicidal behaviours with life events related to academic experiences and with emotional frailty of many young people (Hawton, 1978; Salmons, Har- rington, 1984; Rudd, 1989; Kisch et al., 2005). The authors report first data of a research con- ducted in Ferrara University in order to detect sui- cidal ideation among student population. A self-report interview was submitted to a sample of 37 subjects (29 female; 8 male). The main object is to analyse the correlations among death thoughts, self-esteem, depression and some personality traits that could play an important role in increasing sui- cidal ideation and self-injuring risk. The study includes four different area of investiga- tion: - personal data (age; sex; year of degree course; school life and job situation); - anamnestic data (psychopathological diseases; familiar and social background; drugs or alchool abuse; use of psychotropic medications; contacts with psychoterapists); - a questionnaire aimed to evidence death thoughts, suicidal ideation, suicidal intention, suicidal plans or suicideattempts; - psychometric measures: Reason for Living In- ventory RFL-24 (Linehan, 1983), to identify subjects with suicidal ideation; CES-D (Radloff, 1977), for screening of depressive states; Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965); Irritability and Rumination-Dissipation Scale and Emotional Frailty Scale (Caprara, 1991), questionnaires for specific personality traits. The results show a remarkable prevalence of suicidal ideation in the sample (37,5%) and positive correlation between this variable and level of self-esteem, degree of depression, and personality traits like emotional frailty, irritability and rumination-dissipation.
