This paperpresentsapracticalsolutiontotheproblemofrobustfaultdetectionandisolation(FDI)for faultsaffectingthethrustersofasatellitesystemMarsExpress(MEX).Anon-linearmodelofMEXis usedandthesystemisconsideredinthepresenceofmeasurementerrors,uncertaintyanddisturbance. A robustapproachtoFDIresidualgeneratordesignisdescribedtorealiseadiagnosticschemeforthe satellite system,focusedona‘‘thrustermodulation’’problem.Theapproachtakenisbasedonbothstate estimationofanaccuratelinearmodelforthesatellitesystemandunknowninputde-couplingto achieve robustFDIinthepresenceofseveredynamicuncertaintyduringmainenginedeployment.A brief descriptionofthesatellitestructureisoutlinedinordertohighlightthemainsourcesof uncertaintyanddisturbanceaffectingthemonitoredsystem.Thesatellitenominalandfaultyconditions are simulatedbymeansofanindustrystandardnon-linearmodelimplementationintheMATLABs and SIMULINKs environments. Acomparisonwiththeexistingfaultdiagnosisschemeimplementedon board theMEXisalsoreported.SuitableperformancecriteriaareintroducedtogetherwithMonteCarlo analysis forbothdesigntuningandassessingtherobustnessandperformanceevaluationofthe completeFDIdesignstrategy.
