This paper reports the results of an experimental and numerical investigation on the temporal evolution of the filling process of closed check dams. Experiments performed using a 17.8 m long laboratory flume and adopting various kinds of sands enabled the understanding of the processes related to check dam filling for various sediment transport discharge conditions. Elaborations carried out by a numerical model based on the solution of the De Saint Venant-Exner equations by the TVD McCormack scheme showed a good fit of numerical results to laboratory data, thus indicating the possibility of a proper numerical simulation of check dam operation.

Abstract

This paper reports the results of an experimental and numerical investigation on the temporal evolution of the filling process of closed check dams. Experiments performed using a 17.8 m long laboratory flume and adopting various kinds of sands enabled the understanding of the processes related to check dam filling for various sediment transport discharge conditions. Elaborations carried out by a numerical model based on the solution of the De Saint Venant-Exner equations by the TVD McCormack scheme showed a good fit of numerical results to laboratory data, thus indicating the possibility of a proper numerical simulation of check dam operation.
