AIM OF THE WORK To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a calcium sulphate (CaS)-based biomaterial in the reconstruction of periodontal intraosseous defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 21 subjects were included. 10 defects were assigned to test treatment (open flap debridement plus CaS-based graft), 11 defects were assigned to control treatment (open flap debridement alone). Immediately before surgery, 6 and 12 months after surgery, pocket probing depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession (REC), local bleeding score (BS) and plaque score (PS) were evaluated. RESULTS. In test group, CAL varied from 8.6 ±1.7 mm (baseline) to 5.8 ±1.8 mm (6 and 12 months) while in the control group varied from 8.9 ± 2.0 mm (baseline) to 5.8 ± 2.6 mm (6 months) and 5.6 ± 2.5 mm (12 months). No statistically significant inter-group differences in PPD, CAL, REC and their changes were detected at each observation interval. Test group presented a higher incidence of PS-positive defects at 6 and 12 months and a higher incidence of BS-positive defects at baseline, 6 and 12 months. Conclusions. Within the limits of the present study, the investigated CaS-based biomaterial seems to have limited adjunctive clinical effect with respect to the open flap debridement alone.
