Given the high numbers of different materials used in the different steps of urinary catheterization it may be assumed that a sterile procedural tray containing all the necessary materials arranged according to the procedure sequence may improve the procedure itself, saving time and costs, and also may contribute to decrease hospital infections linked to catheterization. In order to verify this hypothesis we have tested a sterile catheter kit (Pollak International L.T.D. – Euroband – Israel) by monitoring patients who had undergone their first catheterization, or patients who periodically have their catheters changed at the Urology Outpatient Clinic of the Department of Urology, S. Orsola-Malpighi University Hospital in Bologna, Italy. According to the results, use of the procedural tray does not causes any significant incidence of infection/pain symptoms in this sample of patients so that the kit saves the need for administration of antibiotics, thereby preventing antibiotic resistant bacteria. From a comparison of costs it results that the use of the procedural tray cut down the costs of catheterization: 12.70 € with the procedural tray vs 17.63 € with traditional catheterization. Moreover the use of the procedural tray save also nurse time. With the traditional catheterization the time of inserting is between 10-15’ vs 7-10’ using the sterile catheter kit and only one user/unit is required to catheterize the patient, further decreasing the cost of catheterization. From our results it may be asserted that the use of the tested procedural tray for catheterization is a valid alternative to the traditional procedure of catheterization.

Reducing hospital costs by using a specially designed catheter procedural tray
