The idea of putting together a special issue of KRM in honor of Giuseppe Toscani’s 60th birthday was received with great enthusiasm by the “kinetic” com- munity and by Giuseppe’s scientific colleagues and friends from other mathematical communities. There is a common feeling throughout that we have learned a great deal from the ideas, the methodologies and the scientific conclusions of Giuseppe Toscani’s work. The papers related to Toscani’s research in this special issue are authored by collaborators, friends and students of Giuseppe. The topics include classical and non classical applications of kinetic theory, entropy-entropy dissipation methods, asymptotic techniques and numerical simulations. The articles in this volume are ordered alphabetically by names of authors. As a unifying main theme for the special issue we have chosen the topic “Entropy methods and contemporary trends of kinetic theory”. While further advancing the state of knowledge in the field, each article in this volume demonstrates the lasting influence of Giuseppe’s scientific contributions and the great impact of his work on our scientific community. We would like to thank all the authors in this special issue for contributing their high quality papers to honor Professor Toscani and for their efforts to stay close to the imposed deadlines. Moreover, we greatly acknowledge the help of the referees who did an excellent job in peer-reviewing the papers in this issue. With their help, we are convinced to have succeeded in producing a special issue that is a worthy and gratifying celebration of Giuseppe Toscani’s scientific work and legacy. Besides being a distinguished researcher, Giuseppe is a dear friend, an esteemed and generous colleague, and a caring mentor and teacher. He has been a fervent defender of the strategy that an early dissemination of ideas will benefit the whole scientific community. Being faithful to his scientific ideology, he has always com- municated the last advancements of his research in his lectures and collaboration sessions with his many collaborators. We and all contributors of this book join in with our best wishes to Giuseppe for many more years to come! Cento di questi giorni!
