The paper deals with microstructural properties and mechanical strength under fatigue loading of welded joints made of austenitic stainless steel. A short presentation of main properties of austenitic stainless steels is given together with a description of welding process suitable for such alloys. Then the paper is focussed on an experimental activity carried on three high-strength super-austenitic stainless steels: AISI 904 L, 254 SMO, AMANOX 1.3964. These alloys have been joined by means of plasma arc welding (PAW), electron beam welding (EBW) and metal active gas (MAG). The obtained welded joints have been investigated, from microstructural point of view, on the weld bead and on the interface with the parent material, taking into account also the microstructural features of the as-received steels. Finally, the fatigue strength has been tested by means of tensile cyclic loading and by comparing strength and failure modes of different joints.
