Relationships between 17 somatometric characteristics and 6 performance variables were considered in a sample of 478 elite volleyball players (234 males and 244 females), participants in the Italian A1 and A2 League. The women were measured during 1992-93 Championships, the men during 1993-94 Championships. A canonical correlation analysis was carried out between two sets of variables (performance variables and anthropometric traits). In males two canonical variables are necessary to explain the dependance between two sets of traits with more than 87% of shared variance; in females only one. The first canonical variable can be explained as a component to a longitudinal structure of the body, the second one (only in men) as a general size and shape factor.
