The assessment of body fat has become increasingly important as one of several indices of health and fitness. In the present paper we analyse the anthropometric data collected during a longitudinal study. Our sample comprises 446 schoolchildren from 9 to 12 years of age from Ravenna district in northern Italy (Emilia-Romagna region). Six anthropometric traits (height, weight, biceps, triceps, subscapular and suprailiac skinfold thicknesses) were analysed in this report. Body density, %fat, fat mass and fat free mass were assessed by anthropometric methods. The variability in body composition parameters is discussed in relation to growth and sexual dimorphism. Our results and comparisons with international standards confirm that there is a need for up-to-date growth references.
