This study was undertaken to evaluate the changes that have occurred in health costs in the region of Liguria after the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in people with HIV infection. To compare the trend in part of the direct costs before and after the introduction of HAART, we did a retrospective analysis of the trend in the costs incurred by the region of Liguria between 1995 and 1999 for the purchase of direct action antiretroviral drugs and for hospitalisations (Ordinary and Day Hospital) of people with HIV infection. The analysis concentrated on major hospitals attracting patients with HIV infection and related diseases residing in Liguria. The corresponding costs for drugs and hospitalisation were collected in the computerised records of the region of Liguria, to which all computerised records from said hospitals are channelled. The results of the study revealed a change in services and an overall increase in costs that can be related to the introduction of new antiretroviral therapies.
