Demand for new buildings has by and large been satisfied in the more developed European countries leading to a structural decline in the industry and a resultant shift from a supplier-dominated to a client/user-dominated market. Clients are in the main dissatisfied with time of delivery, cost of building and the performance of the completed building. Major factors contributing to this state of affairs include low levels of industrialisation, fragmentation of delivery and the inability of major players in the industry to implement new technological and organisational process models in response. This paper presents the results of a research project aimed at developing a process model to design and deliver Industrialised, Flexible and Demountable (IFD) Buildings to address Client need for quality, shorter delivery time, flexibility in use and economy; Societal needs for sustainability, safer and healthy work environment, and Industry organisational need for partnerships and alliances to realise a more effective and unified approach to building.
