The Introduction (pp. vii-xxviii) advances an original interpretation of W. W. Brown’s pioneering portrayal of slave culture and of his innovative narrative strategies, connecting him intertextually with contemporaneous authors (such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and Lydia Maria Child). This edition is the first to include the various endings Brown created for the different versions of _Clotel_ (1853). The volume includes a rich apparatus of explanatory notes by Fabi (pp. 249-285).
